Empowering Malaysian Women: Ride-Hailing as a Pathway to Economic Independence

A recent statistics by inDrive on its users’ travelling trends has unveiled transformative insights into the ride-hailing market in Malaysia, highlighting significant improvements for women both as drivers and passengers. The data shows an inspiring trend of economic empowerment and altered travel habits, shedding light on the evolving landscape of transportation in Malaysia.

According to the data, there has been an impressive 53% increase in earnings for women drivers in Q1 this year compared to the previous year, marking a promising shift towards gender equality in the transportation sector. This surge not only underscores the viability of ride-hailing as a lucrative job option for women but also reflects broader socio-cultural shifts.

Furthermore, the study reveals that Malaysian women passengers are taking longer trips, with an average distance of 10.6 kilometres per ride, the highest among surveyed regions. This statistic may be indicative of urban sprawl, limited public transportation options, or particular travel preferences that necessitate reliable and safe transportation solutions like those provided by inDrive.

Women drivers constitute 21% of the total rides made in Malaysia in Q1 2024, a figure that is steadily climbing thanks to enhanced safety features and flexible working conditions that appeal to female drivers.

Govin Kumaar A/L Panirsheeluam, inDrive Malaysia Business Development Representative said: “These statistics are not just numbers; they represent the progressive strides towards inclusivity and economic independence for women in Malaysia. Our platform is not only a tool for mobility but also a catalyst for empowerment and opportunity.”

As part of its ongoing efforts to create a supportive environment for women, inDrive Malaysia recently conducted a campaign in conjunction with the International Women’s Day, aimed at encouraging more women to join the ride-hailing economy.

The two-week campaign demonstrated remarkable success and saw participation of over 400 women drivers, collectively completing more than 7,000 rides across Malaysia within the campaign period. This surge in participation underscores the potential and enthusiasm of women drivers within the industry.

15 winners were selected – five from Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Johor Bahru each. The average number of completed rides for winners in Kuala Lumpur and Penang exceeded 100 rides during the campaign period, while in Johor Bahru, the average was 38 rides per winner. These figures not only demonstrate the dedication and capability of the participants but also underscore the increasing acceptance and demand for women drivers in the ride-hailing sector.
