BMW Shorties Premieres ‘Flame of the Forest’ — A Deeply Malaysian Story of Identity, Family and Freedom

BMW Group Malaysia recently unveiled Flame of the Forest, the latest BMW Shorties–funded short film by 2024 Grand Prize Winner Krityishaa A/P Karunagaran, at the BMW Shorties Festival 2025.
Now in its 19th year, BMW Shorties remains Malaysia’s longest-running Arts & Culture initiative for digital content creation—continuing to elevate new storytellers who dare to push social conversations through film.
A Story Rooted in Community, Conflict, and Quiet Courage
Flame of the Forest follows a young nurse who slips away from her caregiver duties for a moment of freedom, only to return to a devastating loss that ruptures both her family’s fragile balance and her own identity.
Set in Kuala Terla, Cameron Highlands—deep within the Malaysian Indian community—the short film dives into generational expectations, cultural pride, and the subtle, often unspoken longing for autonomy within conservative family structures.

Through this narrative, Krityishaa amplifies the emotional complexity faced by young Malaysians who find themselves caught between personal desire and inherited duty. This short film mirrors the struggle many know intimately: searching for selfhood under the weight of tradition.
“Rewarding, confusing, exhausting and liberating” – Krityishaa
“‘Flame of the Forest’ began with a completely different storyline but the more our co-writer, Gogu and I discussed the project, the more we shaped this story to what it is now and that this is the right story that is meant to be told, in this time and space. It is rewarding, confusing, exhausting, and liberating all at once. The project does not just represent the stories of the women around us, but also the men, the people whom we co-exist with, and the chaos that very often exists in our own minds,” said Krityishaa.
“To have this story come to life through the BMW Shorties platform has been both humbling and empowering. It is a reminder of what storytelling can do – which is to help us see and be seen, in all our complexity.”

A Distinctive Malaysian Voice Getting Global Attention
Originally from Ipoh, Krityishaa’s path into filmmaking wasn’t linear. After graduating in Biotechnology, she shifted into Digital Film and Television at Limkokwing University and spent the past seven years shaping a uniquely Malaysian voice as a director, writer and producer.
Her earlier work, Tomorrow is Spring (வருங்காலம் வசந்தகாலம்), won not only the BMW Shorties 2024 Grand Prize but also the Malaysian Open Competition at the SeaShorts Film Festival 2025. The film has since screened in Vietnam, Indonesia, Brunei, and Thailand—earning her regional recognition.

BMW Group Malaysia: “Stories that challenge perspectives”
Sashi Ambihaipahan, Director of Corporate Communications and Sustainability at BMW Group Malaysia, shared: “Krityishaa has brought a remarkable depth and nuance to stories told from the communities present here in Malaysia, in not shying away from the tensions between tradition and self-discovery, and between the traditional family construct and values versus a more modern expression in the wants of today’s society. Her honesty and willingness to explore this complexity is what makes ‘Flame of the Forest’ so powerful, showing a maturity in storytelling that goes beyond technique. At BMW Group Malaysia, through the BMW Shorties platform, we are committed to championing local talent with this kind of creative courage and distinctive voice, creating space for stories that challenge perspectives and demonstrate the changing society of a developing culture.”
