Grab Partners GAC to Deploy 20,000 Electric Vehicles Across Southeast Asia

Grab has entered into a strategic partnership with GAC to deploy an initial 20,000 electric vehicles (EVs) across Southeast Asia to strengthen the region’s ride-hailing EV ecosystem while improving the in-vehicle experience for Grab driver-partners.

The collaboration will roll out GAC’s electric models across Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand, with a focus not only on fleet expansion but also on deeper system integration between Grab and GAC vehicles.

Focus on Driver Experience and System Integration

A key element of the partnership is the integration of the Grab driver app directly into GAC’s intelligent cockpit system. This allows driver-partners to access navigation, high-demand area guidance and safety alerts directly on the vehicle’s central display, reducing the need to switch between devices while driving.

The integration is aimed at improving ergonomics, lowering cognitive load and enhancing overall road safety, particularly for high-mileage professional drivers.

Philipp Kandal, Chief Product Officer at Grab, said,

“At Grab, we are constantly seeking innovations that empower our driver-partners. By integrating the Grab driver app directly into the GAC cockpit display, our driver-partners can receive timely and important data, such as precise navigation and safety alerts, in a more ergonomic way. This ensures a more seamless and intuitive experience that reduces our driver-partners’ cognitive load, while advancing our shared commitment to carbon neutrality and a sustainable future.”

Three GAC EV Models Selected for Ride-Hailing Use

The initial deployment will feature three GAC electric models tailored for professional ride-hailing operations:

  • GAC AION Y
A best-selling model under GAC, the AION Y is widely used as an electric taxi, offering a practical interior and comfortable rear space, making it suitable for airport and premium transfers.
  • GAC AION V
Rated five stars by Euro NCAP, the AION V combines long driving range with a spacious cabin, positioning it as a safety-focused electric SUV for high-utilisation fleet use.
  • GAC AION ES
Known for its efficient range and ergonomic cabin layout, the AION ES has gained popularity alongside the AION Y as a dependable electric taxi option.

All three models feature design elements aimed at ride-hailing operations, including wide-opening doors and generous rear legroom to improve passenger accessibility and comfort.

Flexible Ownership and Fleet Support

Grab driver-partners will be able to access these EVs through vehicle rental arrangements with Grab’s fleet partners, or via financing support under Grab’s car ownership schemes. Both companies are also exploring improved after-sales support tailored specifically for fleet and ride-hailing use.

The partnership aligns with GAC’s global strategy of “Tech-Driven GAC, Advancing Global Reach with a Full-Chain Ecosystem”, which focuses on combining vehicles, software, services and operational capabilities into a unified EV ecosystem.

EV Adoption and Sustainability Push

The initiative comes amid strong growth in Southeast Asia’s EV market. According to the International Energy Agency’s Global EV Outlook 2025, regional EV sales increased by nearly 50% in 2024, underscoring rising adoption momentum.

Grab’s broader regional EV strategy includes:

  • Eco-Friendly Ride options in markets such as Singapore and Thailand, allowing users to prioritise green vehicles at no extra charge
  • Charging partnerships with operators such as EBOOST and Charge+ in Vietnam, offering driver-partners preferential rates
  • Drive-to-Own EV programmes in Thailand with no downpayment and earnings-based repayment
  • Fully electric or hybrid GrabCab fleets in Singapore
  • GrabTaxi Electric in the Philippines, the country’s first fully electric, on-demand taxi fleet recognised by the LTFRB (Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board)
  • Using over 11,000 EVs currently in Indonesia, primarily on high-volume routes

For Grab, facilitating driver-partners’ transition to low- or zero-emission transport remains central to its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040.

Electrifying fleets without integrating software is just replacing engines, not fixing workflows.
