PROTON Offers Trade-In Incentives of Up to RM4,000 Under Government Old-Car Replacement Programme

PROTON is supporting the Malaysian government’s Matching Grant Programme for the Replacement of Old Vehicles by introducing trade-in incentives across its entire model range, giving buyers of new Proton cars savings of up to RM4,000 when scrapping vehicles that are 20 years old or more.

Under the programme, customers who dispose of an old vehicle through approved channels will receive a Proton-funded incentive, which is then matched by a government grant of up to RM2,000.

Up to RM4,000 in Combined Savings

All current Proton models are eligible, but incentive amounts vary by model:

  • Proton Saga and Proton e.MAS 5: Up to RM1,000 from Proton
→ Up to RM2,000 total including the government matching grant
  • Proton X50, Proton X70, and Proton e.MAS 7: RM2,000 from Proton
→ Up to RM4,000 total including the government matching grant

The initiative is designed to encourage owners of ageing vehicles to replace them with newer models that offer improved safety, lower emissions and better fuel or energy efficiency.

Supporting Safer, Cleaner Mobility

The programme aligns with the government’s broader push to reduce the number of older, less efficient vehicles on Malaysian roads. For Proton, it also supports the company’s 2026 growth plans, with a sales target of 200,000 units following a strong 2025 performance where its volume growth significantly outpaced overall Total Industry Volume (TIV) growth.

“PROTON is proud to be able to offer our customers even more value by being a partner in the Malaysian government’s Matching Grant Programme for the Replacement of Old Vehicles. This initiative will encourage the responsible replacement of old, unroadworthy vehicles and improve road safety while supporting the transition towards cleaner and more efficient mobility.

“The incentive offered by PROTON is an extension of the PROTON Xchange Programme launched in May 2025. Offering up to RM2,000 in over trade for customers who scrapped their old vehicles for a new Proton model, 4,344 transactions were made resulting in approximately RM8.68 million being given out towards the purchase of a new car by the end of 2025,” said Dr Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer, PROTON.

Builds on Existing Trade-In Efforts

Proton says the new incentives expand on its earlier Proton Xchange Programme, which rewarded customers for scrapping old vehicles. By the end of 2025, the programme had recorded 4,344 transactions, with nearly RM8.68 million channelled into new car purchases.

With government support now added on top, the cost gap between keeping an ageing car and upgrading to a new Proton narrows further — particularly in the entry-level and B-segment SUV space, where price sensitivity remains high among Malaysian buyers.

Scrapping a 20-year-old car might be sentimental, but safer tech, better efficiency and a few thousand ringgit in incentives make the goodbye a lot easier to justify.
