PROTON Showcases S70’s Fuel Efficiency in Penang One Tank Challenge

The Proton S70 has once again shown it’s not just about looks and performance — it’s a true fuel-saver too. During the Penang Proton One Tank Challenge, held on 11 October as part of the Hari Sukan Negara celebrations for Seberang Perai Tengah, owners put their sedans to the ultimate efficiency test.
Themed “Drive Efficiently. Live Actively. Celebrate Malaysia,” the event aligned perfectly with the National Sports Day spirit of promoting active and sustainable lifestyles. It also followed hot on the heels of PROTON’s announcement as one of the title sponsors for the 2025 Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM) — where a lucky participant will drive home a brand-new Proton S70.
Fuel Economy Meets Fun
Flagged off by YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy, 33 Proton S70 owners took on a scenic 110km route that covered both Penang Island and the mainland, crossing the First and Second Penang Bridges along the way.

The challenge started at Setia Sentral Juru, where each car’s fuel tank was filled to the brim and sealed to ensure a level playing field. Drivers then had to balance smooth, efficient driving with maintaining an average speed to complete the course on time — a real-world test of both machine and driver.
Winners Who Went the Distance
In the end, Abu Bakar Bin Mohd Yusoff emerged as the top fuel-saver, clocking an incredible 3.48L/100km — that’s an average of 31.61km/L, giving a theoretical range of 1,580km from the Proton S70’s 50-litre tank! His efforts earned him RM1,000 in prize money.
Coming in second was Muhammad Syamim Bin Omar Farook with 3.98L/100km (RM800 prize), followed by Mohd Aliff Bin Sani in third with 4.40L/100km (RM600 prize).
The event wasn’t all about driving, though. There were also prizes for best social media engagement and a colouring contest for family members to keep the day lively and inclusive.

S70: Power Meets Practicality
Starting at RM73,800, the Proton S70 uses a 1.5L turbocharged engine that pushes out 150 PS and 226 Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. It’s a combination that offers both spirited performance and impressive efficiency — something the One Tank Challenge proved beyond doubt.
“The PROTON S70 has been engineered to satisfy the demands of drivers looking for a vehicle that balances performance and comfort, with an attractive design and critically, outstanding fuel efficiency. Events such as the Penang PROTON One Tank Challenge are an opportunity to highlight these USP’s and remind current and future owners about why this model is the national sales leader for C-segment sedans,” said Zhang Qiang, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Proton Edar.
With events like this, PROTON continues to show that driving smart can be fun — and fuel-efficient — all at once. Looks like the S70 is ready to go the distance — literally.
