Volkswagen Malaysia Unveils the New Golf R-Line and Golf GTI

Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has officially introduced the latest update of its iconic hatchback, the Golf R-Line and Golf GTI, marking a new era for the nameplate that has long defined everyday performance with premium flair.

Locally assembled at Volkswagen’s Pekan plant like the previous ones, both variants bring sharper styling, advanced tech, and upgraded power to keep the Golf legacy alive for Malaysian enthusiasts.

Golf R-Line: Mild-Hybrid Efficiency, Everyday Excitement

The new Golf R-Line is powered by a 1.5 eTSI mild-hybrid turbo engine producing 150 PS and 250 Nm, paired with a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission with shift-by-wire technology. It completes the century sprint in 8.6 seconds while achieving an impressive 5.2 L/100 km fuel economy.

Its styling borrows cues from Volkswagen’s performance “R” models — featuring an R-Line front and rear bumper, chrome dual exhausts, and 17-inch ‘Coventry’ alloy wheels. Inside, the R-Line continues the sporty theme with ‘R-Line’ leather steering wheel, ‘Carbon Grey’ trim, brushed stainless pedals, and fabric/Artvelours upholstery.

Tech and comfort are highlighted by the 12.9-inch MIB4 infotainment system, Digital Cockpit Pro, voice-controlled IDA assistant, and 3-zone Climatronic air-conditioning with allergen filtration.

Safety comes courtesy of Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE suite, which includes Front Assist with Pedestrian Monitoring, Travel Assist with Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Assist, and Rear Traffic Alert — making the R-Line as sensible as it is sporty.

Golf GTI: The Hot Hatch, Reignited

For purists, the Golf GTI remains the ultimate everyday performance hatch. Under the hood sits a 2.0 TSI turbocharged engine with 265 PS — a 20 PS bump over the previous GTI — mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox.

The design remains unmistakably GTI: the honeycomb grille, red exterior accents, and 18-inch ‘Richmond’ alloys exude its signature hot-hatch aggression. At the rear, dual chrome exhausts and GTI-specific bumpers complete the look.

Inside, the GTI gets Vienna leather sport seats, GTI-embossed steering wheel, brushed stainless pedals, and black metal chrome trim. Tech takes a leap with the 12.9-inch touchscreen, Digital Cockpit Pro, Head-Up Display, and Harman Kardon 480 W sound system (nine speakers + subwoofer).

As with the R-Line, safety features include IQ.DRIVE, bringing semi-autonomous functions like Adaptive Cruise Control, Side Assist, and Driver Attention Detection.

Design, Tech & Details That Matter

Both variants sport new IQ.LIGHT 3D LED Matrix headlights, a redesigned bumper, refined aerodynamics, and for the first time in Malaysia, an illuminated Volkswagen badge.

Cabins feature wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, and illuminated touch sliders for volume and HVAC control. Every element has been redesigned for intuitive, driver-focused ergonomics.

Colours, Pricing & Packages

Both models are available in Oryx White, Moonstone Grey, Grenadilla Black, Kings Red, and Anemone Blue.

The Golf GTI is priced at RM255,990 (including the Volkswagen Assurance Package; RM242,990 without VAP), with the first 50 cars enjoying an early bird price of RM249,990 (registered by 31 December 2025).

The Golf R-Line is open for preview and does not have an official price set yet.

Every Golf is covered by the Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP), which includes:

  • 5 Years Free Maintenance
  • 5 Years Unlimited Mileage Warranty
  • 5 Years Roadside Assistance

Continuing the Legacy

“The Golf family has never been ordinary; it is your everyday made exciting and your drives made unforgettable,” said Renate Noessler, Managing Director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia.

“With the new Golf R-Line, sporty can also mean sensible — fuel-efficient without compromising style. And with the new GTI, we are giving our fans more power, sharper design, and smarter technology, ensuring the GTI continues to thrill in performance and handling,” she added.

Two Golfs. Two personalities. The R-Line is all about refined motion and mild-hybrid smarts, while the GTI stays the undisputed benchmark of hot-hatch madness.
