Sime Motors Opens BYD Mansion Macalister in Penang, Blending Heritage with EV Retail

Sime Darby Beyond Auto has unveiled BYD Mansion Macalister, a new electric vehicle retail concept in Penang that merges heritage architecture with a modern automotive experience.

Located along Jalan Macalister, the century-old building has been restored and repurposed into what is described as Malaysia’s first BYD heritage-concept showroom. Previously a commercial landmark housing various businesses and offices, the property now serves as a boutique EV destination under the BYD brand.

Heritage Meets Modern Retail

The restoration preserves much of the building’s original architectural character, while introducing a contemporary interior tailored to electric mobility. Rather than a conventional dealership layout, BYD Mansion Macalister adopts a gallery-style approach, displaying four vehicles as curated exhibits.

Customers are guided through lounge-style consultation spaces, with a private delivery room designed to enhance the handover experience.

Set on a 26,994 sq ft land parcel with around 9,000 sq ft of built-up space, the facility positions itself as a more personalised and design-led alternative to traditional showrooms.

Integrated Sales, Service and Charging

Beyond retail, the site functions as a full-service ownership hub. The on-site service centre includes five work bays, one alignment bay and three service reception bays, allowing customers to manage aftersales needs within the same location.

To support Penang’s growing EV adoption, the facility also incorporates an urban charging hub equipped with one 60kW DC fast charger and seven AC chargers.

Strengthening BYD’s Presence in Malaysia

“BYD Mansion Macalister represents an important milestone in how we continue to evolve the automotive retail experience,” said Andrew Basham, Managing Director of Sime Motors. “By transforming a historic property into a modern electric mobility destination, we are not only preserving an important part of Penang’s architectural heritage, but also creating a meaningful space where customers can experience the future of mobility. This reflects Sime Motors’ long-term commitment to supporting the growth of electric vehicles and expanding our presence across Malaysia.”

“The opening of BYD Mansion in Macalister is a meaningful milestone for BYD in Malaysia, reflecting our continued commitment to growing the brand in ways that are closer to local communities. What makes this showroom especially significant is how it brings together premium customer experience, innovation, and uniquely Malaysian cultural touches, creating a space that not only showcases our vehicles, but also reflects the warmth, identity, and progress of the market we are proud to serve,” added Jacob Ma, Deputy General Manager of BYD Malaysia.

The launch builds on the partnership between Sime Darby Beyond Auto and BYD, which began in December 2022. The group has since expanded its network across key locations including Ara Damansara, TREC Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Tebrau.

Dealer Network Recognition

Sime Darby Beyond Auto’s performance within the BYD ecosystem has also received recognition, with BYD Penang recently named Best BYD Dealer in Malaysia. The group also secured 13 out of 27 awards at the latest BYD Dealer Conference & Awards Night.

With BYD Mansion Macalister, Sime Darby Beyond Auto continues to expand its footprint while introducing a more experience-focused approach to EV retail in Malaysia.

CarTok Editor’s Note

Heritage-driven retail works in places like George Town or Melaka, where culture and architecture do the storytelling. But most of Malaysia’s car-buying happens in suburban townships and commercial corridors, where charm is replaced by convenience, visibility, and throughput.

So this isn’t a template—it’s a flagship. The real test is whether BYD can translate this “experience-first” approach into more repeatable formats: smaller lifestyle hubs, mall-based studios, or integrated charging-social spaces that fit everyday locations.

Because in the long run, EV adoption won’t be driven by beautiful one-offs—it’ll be shaped by how seamlessly brands can embed themselves into daily life, not just destination visits.
