Malaysia Car of the Year Launches 2026 Buyers’ Guide; Zeekr 009 is Overall Winner

The Malaysia Car of the Year (MCOTY) awards team officially launched its 2026 Annual Car Buyers’ Guide, marking a continued evolution in how the long-running automotive initiative reaches Malaysian consumers.

The launch took place at an exclusive, invite-only event held at Zeekr Sunway Space in Subang Jaya, where the latest edition of the buyers’ guide was unveiled with the presence of the overall winner: the Zeekr 009.

A New Chapter for a Longstanding Automotive Authority

Founded in 2002 by veteran motoring editor Yamin Vong, the Malaysia Car of the Year awards was established with a panel of respected automotive journalists from across the industry. The programme has consistently recognised standout vehicles in the Malaysian market, pausing only briefly for two years from 2020.

Judging resumed in 2023 through a collaboration with the Malaysia Automotive Robotics and Internet of Things Institute (MARii), an agency under the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, reinforcing the programme’s role in supporting informed car-buying decisions.

From Newspaper Results to Coffee Table Collectible

Traditionally, MCOTY winners were announced via newspaper. However, in recent years, the awards have taken a more curated approach with the introduction of a premium, limited-edition coffee table book format.

The 2026 edition continues this direction, offering a physical publication that compiles the year’s top automotive insights and evaluations. Despite the premium presentation, accessibility remains central to the initiative.

The full Annual Car Buyers’ Guide will be made available as a free PDF download via the official MCOTY website following the launch.

“For over two decades, our panel has volunteered its expertise to help Malaysian car buyers make informed decisions,” said Yamin Vong. “The shift to a coffee table book and free digital guide ensures that legacy continues with style and accessibility.”

Zeekr 009 Takes Top Honours

Headlining this year’s guide is the Zeekr 009, which has been named Malaysia Car of the Year 2025. The all-electric MPV represents a growing shift in the market, combining luxury, space, and electrified performance in a segment traditionally dominated by combustion-powered models.

Guests attending the book launch were also given a closer look at the award-winning model.

Free Access Remains a Core Principle

Despite its evolution in format and presentation, the MCOTY Buyers’ Guide remains rooted in its original purpose — providing unbiased, expert-driven guidance for Malaysian car buyers at no cost.

The 2026 edition will be accessible online as a free download, ensuring it continues to serve as a practical reference point for consumers navigating an increasingly complex automotive landscape.

CarTok Editor’s Note

As market trends and consumer expectations evolve, MCOTY is adapting to how Malaysians consume car advice. In an era of endless online opinions, a structured, expert-led reference may matter more than ever — particularly as modern cars grow more complex and harder to evaluate at a glance.
