Proton X50 Gets New Quartz Black Colour Option Across All Variants From April

PROTON has introduced Quartz Black as a new colour option for the Proton X50, extending the black finish across all variants starting this month following strong response to the recently introduced limited-run Black Edition.

The move follows the launch of the Proton X50 Black Edition in March, which was limited to 200 units based on the Flagship variant. According to PROTON, the positive reception to that special edition helped drive the decision to make black a permanent addition to the X50 range.

The new Quartz Black joins the X50 lineup as the company looks to maintain momentum in Malaysia’s highly competitive B-segment SUV market, where newer rivals continue to enter the space.

Black Goes Mainstream for X50

Rather than positioning it as a cosmetic update alone, PROTON is leaning into buyer preference and market demand.

For a model already known for its sporty design, the darker finish gives the X50 a more assertive road presence, especially around its front fascia, sculpted body lines, chrome detailing, and LED light signatures.

From a market perspective, black also remains one of the most popular resale-friendly colours among Malaysian buyers, making this more than just a styling move. In practical terms, this is PROTON responding to what the market has already shown it wants.

Sales Remains Strong in 2026

The X50 continues to be one of the brand’s strongest volume drivers.

PROTON says it sold 3,265 units in March, bringing total first-quarter 2026 sales to 7,571 units. That places the X50 as Malaysia’s best-selling SUV for the first three months of 2026, with sales up 48% year-on-year versus the same period in 2025.

The numbers also suggest the facelifted model introduced in July last year is continuing to resonate strongly with buyers. In a segment now crowded with newer B-SUV alternatives, that sales performance remains significant.

After-sales Remains Part of the Ownership Pitch

Beyond the new colour option, PROTON is also reinforcing the X50’s ownership proposition through its after-sales promises. These include:

  • Fast Service for basic maintenance within 90 minutes
  • 1-Day Service Delivery for more extensive servicing
  • A relief car plus one-time complimentary service if repairs exceed three working days

This should broaden the appeal beyond surface-level styling. For many buyers in this segment, especially first-time SUV owners, ownership convenience increasingly matters as much as the product itself.

CarTok Editor’s Note

The black finish itself may sound like a minor update but PROTON is effectively converting a limited-edition run into a full-lineup demand play based on studied demand.

When a model is already leading the segment, small, market-led updates like this can help keep showroom traffic moving without needing a major product overhaul. Sometimes, sustained market leadership is about knowing what buyers are asking for.
