GWM Malaysia has opened bookings for the GWM WEY G9 Hi4 HEV, adding a conventional hybrid variant to its premium MPV line-up alongside the existing WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV plug-in hybrid.
The new hybrid-electric vehicle (HEV) variant is scheduled for an upcoming market introduction, with pricing and full specifications to be announced then.
This gives Malaysian buyers another powertrain option in the luxury MPV segment, particularly those who want hybrid technology but not want to have to plug in the vehicle to recharge its battery.
GWM Malaysia shared that the current WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV is approaching 2,000 deliveries nationwide. The company also claims the plug-in hybrid is Malaysia’s best-selling luxury MPV priced above RM200,000, based on cumulative 2026 new-car registration data from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

2.0-Litre Turbo Hybrid With 358PS And 782Nm
The GWM WEY G9 Hi4 HEV uses the brand’s Hi4 hybrid technology, combining a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a four-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), dual electric motors and a 1.67kWh hybrid battery.
The powertrain produces a combined output of 358PS and 782Nm of torque. According to GWM, this system combines the performance and capability of four-wheel drive with the efficiency associated with two-wheel-drive operation.
Unlike the existing PHEV, the HEV variant does not require external charging. Its battery is managed as part of the hybrid system, allowing drivers to refuel at petrol stations without depending on charging infrastructure.
This makes the HEV a practical alternative for buyers who regularly travel long distances or use their MPVs for daily family transport but do not have convenient access to home or public charging.
Premium Three-Row Cabin Retained
The WEY G9 Hi4 HEV continues the model’s focus on passenger comfort, with features including Nappa leather seating, active noise cancellation, a premium sound system and intelligent driver assistance technologies.
Its spacious three-row cabin is designed to accommodate families and passengers travelling over longer distances, positioning the G9 as a premium people carrier rather than simply a larger family vehicle.
The addition of the HEV gives customers a choice between a plug-in hybrid, which can be externally charged, and a non-plug-in hybrid that prioritises refuelling convenience.

Bookings Open Ahead of Official Launch
Stan Li Hao, managing director of commercial operations at GWM Malaysia, said the HEV builds on the existing PHEV’s market reception by offering another way to experience the WEY G9’s comfort and hybrid technology.
Chief operating officer Roslan Abdullah added that the two powertrain options are intended to cater to different driving needs and lifestyles.
Bookings for the GWM WEY G9 Hi4 HEV are now open through authorised GWM dealerships nationwide.
A competitive price and convincing real-world fuel economy could help broaden the G9’s appeal to buyers who want a premium hybrid MPV without the additional charging considerations of a plug-in model.
GWM has yet to disclose the HEV’s fuel consumption figures, performance timings or equipment differences compared with the PHEV. Expect all that at the official launch.
