SAIC Motor Malaysia has expanded the locally assembled MG MGS5 EV range with the introduction of the new MGS5 EV COM, bringing the rear-wheel-drive electric SUV into a more accessible price bracket at RM103,900.
The new entry-level variant sits below the existing MGS5 EV LUX, which remains priced at RM116,900 in Peninsular Malaysia, excluding road tax and insurance.
The COM is positioned as a more affordable way into MG’s electric SUV line-up while retaining the MGS5 EV’s rear-wheel-drive layout and core safety technology.
49kWh Battery, 340km Range
The MGS5 EV COM is powered by a 49kWh battery and a rear-mounted electric motor producing 170PS and 250Nm.
It has a claimed driving range of up to 340km, compared with the LUX’s 62kWh battery, 203PS and 350Nm, which provide up to 446km of range.
The COM supports DC fast charging at up to 120kW, while the higher-spec LUX supports up to 150kW.
Both variants use MG’s ultra-thin battery layout, which the company says helps lower the centre of gravity while improving cabin space and driving stability.
What You Lose Compared With LUX
The lower price comes through a number of equipment changes.
The MGS5 EV COM gets:
- Fabric seats instead of ventilated leatherette seats
- 17-inch black alloy wheels instead of 18-inch alloys
- DC fast charging up to 120kW instead of 150kW
- No panoramic sunroof
The LUX adds leatherette seats, ventilated and power-adjustable front seats, a heated leather steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, 18-inch alloy wheels and a hands-free powered tailgate.
Both variants retain seven airbags and MG’s MG Pilot ADAS 2.5 suite, including Traffic Jam Assist and Intelligent Cruise Control.
With the new COM priced at RM103,900, there is now a RM13,000 gap between the two MGS5 EV variants. Prices are for Peninsular Malaysia, excluding road tax and insurance.
The COM is available in Silver and Grey, while the LUX is offered in Gold, Silver and Grey. Both variants use a dark interior, with fabric upholstery on the COM and leatherette on the LUX.
Same Long-Term Battery Warranty
MG is also retaining the same ownership assurance package across the MGS5 EV range.
Both variants come with 7-year/150,000km vehicle warranty, 8-year/180,000km battery pack warranty, 8-year/160,000km Motor Control Unit (MCU) warranty.
The MGS5 EV COM is now available for viewing and bookings at MG showrooms nationwide.
As part of the launch offer, buyers receive a RM3,000 rebate and complimentary wallbox.

For buyers whose daily driving is comfortably within the COM’s claimed 340km range, the new variant could be a compelling purchase.
The LUX remains the better choice for those who regularly travel longer distances or place greater value on equipment and charging performance.
More importantly, the introduction of the COM gives MG another way to compete in Malaysia’s increasingly crowded sub-RM110,000 EV space without having to create an entirely new model.
