Gentari & BYD Malaysia Partner To Explore Ultra-Fast Flash Charging Network

BYD Malaysia and Gentari have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore the deployment of BYD Flash Charging technology in Malaysia, potentially bringing significantly faster charging to compatible electric vehicles.

Signed in Shenzhen, Guangdong, on 21 October 2026, the agreement will see Gentari Sdn Bhd, the clean energy solutions company wholly owned by PETRONAS, and BYD Malaysia assess opportunities to develop high-power charging infrastructure supported by battery energy storage systems (BESS).

BYD Flash Charging can deliver approximately 400km of driving range in as little as five minutes under optimal conditions for compatible vehicles. However, the Malaysian deployment remains at the exploration stage, with no confirmed rollout schedule or locations announced.

EV Charging In A Flash

The proposed collaboration will assess suitable locations for BYD Flash Charging stations, including key intercity corridors connecting major population centres.

Beyond identifying sites, the companies will evaluate supporting power infrastructure, battery energy storage requirements, technical and commercial feasibility, project development opportunities and potential operating models for wider deployment.

Battery energy storage is an important part of the proposed system, helping support high-power charging installations where grid capacity and electricity supply requirements need to be addressed. The MoU does not, however, confirm the technical configuration of the stations.

The companies will also explore opportunities in renewable energy generation and energy storage, combining Gentari’s clean energy capabilities with BYD’s battery and technology expertise.

Growing Demand For Charging Stations

The proposed partnership comes as Malaysia’s EV market continues to expand. According to the figures cited by the companies, the country recorded 53,537 new EV registrations in the first nine months of 2026, an increase of 98.8% compared with the corresponding period last year.

Malaysia aims to establish 30,000 public EV charging points nationwide by 2030. While the number of charging points is important, charging speed, reliability, location and the availability of supporting electrical infrastructure will also influence the ownership experience as EV adoption grows.

Gentari currently operates more than 600 EV charging points in Malaysia. Through its Gentari Go Roaming Hub, it also provides access to approximately 18,000 charging points across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and India.

“Malaysia’s EV market is growing, but the next phase of adoption will depend on the quality, convenience and reliability of the charging experience,” said Sushil Purohit, Group Chief Executive Officer of Gentari.

He added that the collaboration combines BYD’s EV, battery and high-power charging technology with Gentari’s experience in developing and operating charging networks.

BYD Expanding Its Charging Technology Beyond China

For BYD, the proposed Malaysian deployment would form part of its efforts to bring its advanced charging technology to international markets.

“Malaysia is an important market for BYD, and we are pleased to bring BYD Flash Charging here as part of our continued efforts to support the country’s growing EV adoption,” said Liu Xueliang, Vice President of BYD and General Manager of BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division.

Jacob Ma, Managing Director of BYD Malaysia, said the collaboration was intended to strengthen the local EV ecosystem and give customers greater confidence in switching to electric mobility.

The MoU was signed by Purohit and Ma, with representatives from PETRONAS, Gentari and BYD Group attending the ceremony, including BYD Group Chairman Wang Chuanfu.

For Malaysian EV owners, the potential benefit is obvious: charging stops would become considerably shorter if the technology is deployed locally and compatible vehicles become available. However, the 400km range in five minutes applies under optimal conditions and should not be treated as a guaranteed charging result in everyday use.

The next milestones will for the companies to identify commercially viable sites, secure the required power infrastructure and confirm a deployment plan. Until then, BYD Flash Charging in Malaysia remains a proposed development.

CarTok Editor’s Note

High-power charging will help address one of the practical concerns holding back EV adoption in Malaysia, particularly for drivers who regularly travel between states. But a five-minute charging claim is only as useful as the infrastructure and vehicles that can deliver it.

Gentari and BYD have the potential to combine charging-network operations, battery technology and energy storage in a meaningful way.

This MoU is a promising first step to seeing a practical, accessible and reliable ultra-fast charging network deployed.
