MG Highlights Heritage And Growing Community At KLIMS 2026

The curtains have closed on the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) 2026, but one of the more interesting stories to emerge was MG’s bringing together of two very different generations of owners under a single brand identity.

Last week, SAIC Motor Malaysia hosted an MG Car Club Gathering that saw 39 privately owned MG vehicles displayed together, ranging from classic British sports cars dating back more than half a century to the brand’s latest electric vehicles.

The gathering featured 34 modern MG EVs alongside five heritage models, offering visitors a glimpse into how the brand has evolved from its traditional sports car roots into a modern electrified mobility player.

What made the event notable was the participation of both Kelab MG Malaysia and MG EV Club Malaysia, representing enthusiasts from two distinct eras of MG ownership.

Kelab MG Malaysia, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, remains one of Malaysia’s longest-running automotive clubs. Its members continue to preserve and maintain classic MG models that helped establish the brand’s reputation among driving enthusiasts.

At the same time, MG EV Club Malaysia reflects the brand’s growing appeal among a new generation of owners attracted by electric mobility. The club currently has around 360 members nationwide.

Among the modern vehicles showcased were the MG S5 EV, MG4, MG ZS EV and Cyberster, while heritage models included the MG TD, MG YT Tourer, MG Midget, MGB GT and MGA.

According to SAIC Motor Malaysia Chief Operating Officer Hoffen Teh, MG ownership extends beyond the vehicles themselves and includes a strong sense of community among owners.

“Gatherings such as this create meaningful opportunities for heritage and modern MG owners to connect, exchange stories and celebrate their shared appreciation for the brand. They also allow prospective customers to experience firsthand the strong sense of community that makes MG ownership unique,” he said.

The gathering formed part of MG’s broader participation at KLIMS 2026, where the company also previewed the all-new MG ZS ahead of its official launch in Malaysia.

For MG, the event highlighted a position that few automotive brands can currently claim. While many manufacturers are navigating the transition from internal combustion engines to electrification, MG has managed to maintain a connection between its historic identity and its future direction.

The sight of a classic MGA parked alongside a fully electric Cyberster serves as a reminder of how much the automotive industry has changed over the decades. Yet both vehicles continue to represent the same marque that first established itself as a maker of driver-focused sports cars.

As Malaysia’s automotive market becomes increasingly crowded with new entrants, MG’s ability to draw upon more than a century of brand heritage while building a growing modern ownership community could prove to be an important differentiator.

Some brands talk about heritage. Fewer can point to owners who have spent decades preserving that heritage while a new generation simultaneously buys into the brand’s future. For some newer automotive brands entering the market today, there is no heritage story to tell yet.

The MG gathering at KLIMS 2026 demonstrated something that cannot be built overnight. Beyond the vehicles themselves, there is an ownership community that spans generations, from enthusiasts maintaining classic British sports cars to drivers embracing the brand’s latest EVs.

In a market where new models appear almost every month, this sense of continuity could be one of MG’s most valuable assets, if used effectively. Technology evolves quickly. Communities tend to last much longer.
