PUSPAKOM Cuts Undercarriage Inspection Time By 90% With AI

PUSPAKOM has introduced Malaysia’s first AI-assisted undercarriage inspection technology, which can reduce the inspection time for heavy commercial vehicles from around 10 minutes to about one minute.

The AI-powered Undercarriage Inspection System was showcased at the launch of Jelajah Malaysia Digital 2026 in Damansara Damai last weekend.

Developed with Malaysian technology company Keymag Sdn Bhd, the system uses intelligent image analysis to automatically detect potential vehicle defects, including corrosion, oil leaks, brake system faults, axle defects and structural damage.

PUSPAKOM said it is the first vehicle inspection organisation in Malaysia, and among the first globally, to use AI-assisted technology for statutory commercial vehicle inspections.

Helping Examiners Speed Up Inspections

The biggest benefit is inspection speed. PUSPAKOM said an AI-assisted undercarriage inspection can be completed in about one minute, compared with approximately 10 minutes previously – reducing inspection time by nearly 90%.

For commercial vehicle operators, the shorter inspection time could translate into less downtime and shorter waiting periods.

PUSPAKOM CEO Mahmood Razak Bahman said the technology is intended to deliver practical benefits to commercial vehicle drivers and operators whose livelihoods depend on productivity.

“For example, reducing the time required for an AI-powered undercarriage inspection from 10 minutes to about one minute, a reduction of nearly 90% of the time gives a lorry driver approximately 10 additional minutes that can be spent on making deliveries, serving customers or simply getting home sooner,” he said.

The higher inspection capacity also allows PUSPAKOM to process more vehicles per hour, potentially reducing congestion and waiting times at inspection facilities.

Humans Still Make The Final Decision

Despite the increased use of AI, PUSPAKOM stressed that the technology does not replace its Vehicle Examiners.

The AI system acts as a decision-support tool, identifying potential defects and anomalies for further verification. The final pass or fail decision remains solely with PUSPAKOM’s trained Vehicle Examiners.

The system also creates digital inspection records, which can provide greater transparency and allow inspection findings to be objectively verified if they are disputed.

PUSPAKOM said this approach allows AI to improve speed and consistency while retaining human oversight of statutory inspections.

Currently For Heavy Commercial Vehicles

The AI-powered undercarriage inspection system is currently deployed through PUSPAKOM’s Mobile Truck Service (MTS), which conducts inspections for heavy commercial vehicles.

The technology is part of PUSPAKOM’s wider plan to introduce AI across other areas of vehicle inspection.

The company is also developing ASTRA, an above-carriage inspection solution in collaboration with Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). Future AI-powered tyre inspection capabilities are also planned.

PUSPAKOM said these technologies are expected to be deployed in stages over the next 24 months.

40 Complimentary Private Vehicle Inspection Slots

As part of its participation in Jelajah Malaysia Digital 2026, PUSPAKOM is also offering 40 complimentary Private Vehicle Inspection (PVI) slots.

The complimentary inspections are available through pre-registration, while walk-in inspections will be accommodated subject to availability.

PUSPAKOM said its participation in Jelajah Malaysia Digital will continue at subsequent events as it brings its digital vehicle inspection technologies and services closer to communities across Malaysia.

PUSPAKOM’s use of AI is significant not because it removes people from the inspection process, but because it tackles one of the biggest weaknesses of a statutory inspection system: time.
