Hong Leong Yamaha Motor Starts 2026 with Launch of New Yamaha Tracer 9 GT

Hong Leong Yamaha Motor (HLYM) is kickstarting 2026 with the introduction of the new Yamaha Tracer 9 GT, marking the brand’s first model launch of the year while outlining its direction for the Malaysian market.

The launch highlights HLYM’s focus on delivering greater value and enhanced riding experiences, particularly within Malaysia’s growing big bike segment. The Tracer 9 GT represents the latest evolution of Yamaha’s sport-touring platform, bringing improvements centred on real-world comfort, technology integration, and everyday usability.

Yamaha’s 2026 Direction: Big Bike Growth

HLYM sees the big bike segment as a key growth pillar moving forward, supported by positive momentum across multiple categories. The company notes rising interest in automatic motorcycles in the 200–500cc range, while the above-500cc touring segment continues to show strong expansion. This reflects a broader shift towards motorcycles that balance long-distance capability with daily practicality.

Speaking at the launch, Hoo Wan Tim, HLYM’s General Manager of Branding & Marketing, said:

“In 2025, Yamaha strengthened its position as a market leader across both the mass-market and big bike segments, reflecting the trust and confidence riders place in the brand. This is made possible by the unwavering support of our customers, which continues to drive the company forward into 2026 with a focus on delivering more rewarding riding experiences.”

He added:

“The Malaysian big bike market presents a significant growth opportunity for Yamaha. Our aim is to introduce products that are relevant, premium, and aligned with how riders live, ride, and explore,”

Built for Sport-Touring Comfort and Performance

Positioned as a premium sport-touring motorcycle, the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT blends performance with touring practicality. Yamaha describes it as a model that carries the brand’s racing DNA into everyday riding, whether in urban traffic or on long-distance journeys.

One of the standout additions is the Matrix LED Headlight system, which automatically adjusts individual LEDs to optimise illumination depending on surrounding traffic conditions. For rider comfort, the Tracer 9 GT also features an electronically adjustable windscreen and a redesigned, wind-tunnel-tested fairing aimed at improving wind protection over long rides.

Advanced Electronics and Rider Aids

The Tracer 9 GT introduces a new 7-inch full-colour TFT display, serving as the interface for the Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) system. Riders can customise engine characteristics and electronic intervention levels to suit different riding styles and road conditions.

Other key technology and convenience features include:

  • Y-Connect with integrated navigation
  • Electronically controlled suspension
  • Third-generation quick shifter
  • Smart Key System
  • Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) for added safety

Yamaha has also updated the seat design to improve ground reach, making the bike more accessible during stops and low-speed manoeuvres.

Price and Availability in Malaysia

The Yamaha Tracer 9 GT is offered in two colour options: Ceramic Ice and Tech Black.

In Malaysia, it is priced at RM71,888 (recommended retail price, excluding insurance and registration) and is now available at authorised Yamaha dealerships nationwide.

CarTok Editor’s Note:

At nearly RM72,000, the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT has officially exited the “entry-level” conversation and entered the “I should probably check with my spouse first” territory. But for that price, you aren’t just buying a motorcycle; you’re buying a solution to the inevitable reality of aging.

The “Buy It If…”

  • Your back has a Twitter account: The electronic suspension is the star here. It treats Malaysian road “texture” (read: potholes) with a level of indifference that your lower back will appreciate daily.
  • You actually ride at night: Those Adaptive Matrix LEDs are genuinely impressive. It’s nice to know your bike is actively trying not to blind oncoming traffic, even if that Myvi with the high beams on doesn’t extend you the same courtesy.
  • You value “Swiss Army Knife” energy: It’s fast enough to scare you on a Sunday morning, yet civilized enough to take you to a meeting without looking like you’ve just finished a qualifying lap at Sepang.

The “Give It A Miss If…”

  • You measure value by “CCs per Ringgit”: If you’re the type to point out that you could buy a used European liter-bike for this price, this Yamaha isn’t for you. You’re paying for the warranty, the reliability, and the fact that it won’t leak oil on your driveway.
  • You hate screens: The 7-inch TFT is beautiful, but if you find yourself getting frustrated with your smartphone, navigating Yamaha’s menus might result in a very expensive tantrum at the side of the road.

Final Thought: > The 2026 Tracer 9 GT is the “Dad Bike” that went to MIT. It’s sensible, sophisticated, and arguably the most complete sport-tourer on the market right now. It won’t make you look like a rebel, but it will make you look like the smartest person at the R&R stop—mostly because you won’t be limping when you get off the seat.
