Four Days, Mud, Pandas And A Thunderstorm: What JAC Day 2026 Revealed About The Brand

A thunderstorm is probably the last thing an event organiser wants when hundreds of international guests have gathered for a major outdoor celebration.
But when the skies opened up during JAC Day 2026 in Chengdu, China, the evening did not come to an abrupt end. Instead, the dinner and Global Fans Gala were moved indoors, with the crowd gathering in a smaller hall to keep the celebration going.
The atmosphere was different from what had been planned, but the excitement remained.

In Chinese culture, rain is traditionally regarded as a symbol of good fortune, prosperity and wealth. Perhaps there was something fitting about the unexpected downpour at an event celebrating a brand looking to grow its presence around the world.
More importantly, the response to the disruption offered a glimpse into the approach behind JAC Day: bringing people together, building relationships and making the best of an unexpected situation.
Held in late August, the sixth edition of JAC Day brought together more than 100 international media representatives, vehicle owners and selected guests from over 20 countries. The theme was “Join and Cherish”.
And while the four-day programme included plenty of driving, vehicle showcases and technology, it was also about understanding JAC beyond the badge.

More Than A Gathering Of Cars
JAC Day was not a series of product presentations.
The programme took guests through Chengdu’s cultural attractions, local Sichuan food and historical landmarks, providing a broader introduction to the city and the people behind the brand.
We also visited the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, an engineering achievement dating back more than 2,000 years. Its ability to manage water flow and control flooding without relying on a conventional dam remains impressive today.

At Panda Valley and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, the pace slowed considerably. Watching pandas casually munching on bamboo was a welcome change from conversations about battery capacity, horsepower and intelligent driving systems.
These activities might seem unrelated to an automotive event, but they helped put the gathering into perspective.
JAC was bringing together people from different countries and backgrounds, giving them an opportunity to experience the brand’s home market while getting to know one another.
This is a different approach to inviting journalists to a showroom, handing them a specification sheet and sending them out for a drive.

Getting To Know The Vehicles
Of course, the vehicles remained a central part of the programme.
The off-road experience took place on a forested course outside Chengdu, where recent rainfall had turned the red clay terrain into a slippery challenge.
The main vehicle was the JAC T9 PHEV (which will see an official launch in Malaysia in November), accompanied by the JS9 SUV. Having already written about the T9 PHEV‘s driving characteristics, there is little need to revisit the full technical details here.

But what stood out during the off-road session was how the electrified powertrain could contribute to the pickup’s capability.
The combination of a turbocharged petrol engine, dual electric motors and electric four-wheel drive delivered torque quickly, helping the vehicle negotiate muddy sections despite its road-biased tyres.
It was a practical demonstration of how electrification can serve a vehicle’s purpose rather than simply being a means of reducing fuel consumption.

The experience also reflected JAC’s wider product direction.
Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group Corp (JAC) has a long history in commercial vehicles and pickups, dating back to 1964, but its ambitions now extend well into passenger cars, SUVs, MPVs and premium vehicles.
At the outdoor activities, international media were also exposed to the JS4 Pro, JS8 Pro and E30X.

And this broader strategy became more apparent at the 2026 Chengdu Motor Show.
From Pickups To Luxury Cars And Intelligent Concepts
At the JAC stand, the MAEXTRO brand attracted considerable attention.
Developed through a platform-level partnership with Huawei, MAEXTRO is JAC’s move into the luxury segment.

The MAEXTRO V800 made its first public appearance at the show. Measuring 5,495mm long, with a 3,430mm wheelbase, the flagship combines an 800V electrical architecture, active suspension and Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 5 intelligent driving technology.
The MAEXTRO S800 Grand Design was also displayed, offering another look at the direction of the premium brand.

Elsewhere, the DEFINE-X concept demonstrated a more adventurous interpretation of an SUV.
This six-seat concept features a rear bicycle rack and integrated fishing seats, while its intelligent by-wire chassis supports rear-wheel steering of up to 12 degrees.

Meanwhile, the RF8 PHEV MPV showcased a more comfort-oriented approach, with zero-gravity executive seating and a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Taken together, the vehicles showed a company looking to expand its appeal to a wider range of customers, with technology and different mobility needs shaping its product development.

When The Weather Changed The Plan
The Global Fans Gala was supposed to be the grand finale for JAC Day.
The outdoor gathering near Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport was planned around speeches, musical performances, dinner and presentations from JAC owners.
Then came the rain, which guests decided to brave initially as umbrellas were quickly passed around.

But strong winds, thunder and lightning followed the torrential downpour and eventually forced the organisers to abandon the outdoor setup.

The response was swift. Guests were moved indoors, and the dinner and concert continued in a nearby hall.
The smaller venue created a different atmosphere. The crowd was closer to the performers, and the celebration became more intimate. It was not the large outdoor gathering originally planned, but the event retained its energy.
For an automotive brand, resilience is often discussed in terms of product durability, engineering or the ability to withstand challenging conditions.
Here, it was demonstrated in a much more human way.

Plans changed. The organisers adapted. The people involved continued to make the evening work.
The experience was a reminder that the success of an international gathering is not measured by the scale of its stage or the number of people in attendance.
It also depends on how well they respond when circumstances change.

What JAC Day Means For Malaysia
JAC operates in more than 130 countries and regions, with an expanding international manufacturing and sales network.
For a company with such global ambitions, building relationships with customers, media and partners is an important part of establishing its presence in overseas markets.

Malaysia is one of its international markets.
Local distributor, Evolvelectric Motors, is preparing to introduce the T9 PHEV, with plans for local CKD assembly also in the pipeline.
The electrified petrol-powered pickup will enter a market where buyers are becoming increasingly familiar with Chinese automotive brands, but where aftersales support, product reliability and long-term ownership confidence remain important considerations.

JAC’s product development is certainly worth following, particularly as the company moves beyond its traditional commercial-vehicle roots.
JAC Day also offered a glimpse into another part of the brand’s approach: building connections with the people who will eventually represent, drive and experience its vehicles in different markets.

The trip to Chengdu covered plenty of ground, from ancient engineering and giant pandas to muddy off-road trails and futuristic concepts. But the most memorable moment was probably the one that was never supposed to happen.
The thunderstorm disrupted the grand outdoor celebration, but it did not end the evening.
And perhaps that was the most fitting takeaway from JAC Day 2026.
A brand’s ambitions may be reflected in its vehicles, but its character is also revealed in how it brings people together — and how it responds when things do not go according to plan.
