Dongfeng Enters Malaysia’s Heavy Truck Market With CKD Assembly Plans And 200-Truck Deal

Dongfeng Heavy Industries Sdn Bhd has officially launched its operations in Malaysia as the authorised distributor of Dongfeng heavy-duty trucks, introducing a range of commercial vehicles targeted at the transport, logistics and construction sectors.

Based in Klang, the company is headed by industry veteran Quek Wang and was appointed as Dongfeng’s official distributor for Malaysia last year. The launch marks several milestones for the new operation, including the signing of a purchase agreement with Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles involving 200 trucks, an assembly agreement with Gemilang Coachwork Sdn Bhd, as well as customer purchase agreements.

At the event, Dongfeng Heavy Industries showcased its initial product line-up, comprising 4×2 and 6×4 prime movers, 6×4 and 8×4 tipper trucks, as well as 6×4 cement mixers.

According to the company, the trucks comply with Euro 5 emissions standards and utilise proven engine and drivetrain technologies designed to meet the demands of commercial operators.

The vehicles will be assembled locally through a completely knocked down (CKD) programme by Johor-based Gemilang Coachwork.

Quek said Gemilang’s manufacturing expertise, production engineering capabilities and quality control standards make it a suitable partner to support Dongfeng’s long-term growth plans in Malaysia.

Gemilang Coachwork director Pang Jun Jie said the company’s experience in transforming CKD units into market-ready commercial vehicles would help support the localisation programme and future expansion efforts.

Representing Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles, Wang Long, chairman of the board and party secretary of China Dongfeng Motor Industry Import & Export Co Ltd, said the establishment of Dongfeng Heavy Industries reflects Dongfeng’s commitment to strengthening its presence in Malaysia while enhancing customer support and aftersales services.

Beyond the vehicles themselves, Dongfeng Heavy Industries also wants to emphasise the importance of aftersales support. The company is working to establish workshops at strategic locations nationwide, with all authorised service centres required to provide mobile rescue services to minimise downtime for its customer fleets.

Founded in 1969, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles is one of China’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturers, producing light-, medium- and heavy-duty trucks for logistics, construction, mining and specialised transport applications.

Launching a truck brand is relatively straightforward. Building the confidence of fleet operators is significantly harder. Transport companies tend to buy based on their confidence on uptime, parts availability and aftersales support rather than brand image alone. Dongfeng recognises this reality, thus is placing nationwide service support at the centre of its Malaysian strategy.
