2026 Toyota GR Corolla Launches in Malaysia with New Automatic Variant

In conjunction with the final race weekend of the Vios Challenge, UMW Toyota Motor officially launched the 2026 Toyota GR Corolla, expanding the line-up with a new automatic transmission variant for Malaysia while introducing mechanical and usability updates aimed at improving both performance consistency and everyday drivability.
The headline addition is the 8-speed GAZOO Racing Direct Automatic Transmission (GR-DAT), developed by Toyota Gazoo Racing to deliver faster, more precise shifts while preserving the GR Corolla’s performance-focused character. The new option broadens accessibility without displacing the existing six-speed manual variant.

GR-DAT: Built for Performance, Not Compromise
Toyota stresses that the GR-DAT is not a conventional automatic. Developed through motorsport testing, the transmission features close-ratio gearing, high-response solenoids and reinforced friction materials designed to maintain shift performance under sustained high loads.
The system includes Launch Start Control and a revised sequential shift logic, with a reversed M-mode gate layout introduced following driver feedback. Cooling has been a key focus, with the automatic model receiving a dedicated ATF cooling system combining air-cooled and water-cooled circuits to improve thermal stability during spirited driving.

More Torque, Improved Thermal Management
Power continues to come from the familiar 1.6-litre G16E-GTS turbocharged three-cylinder engine, now producing 300 PS and 400 Nm of torque, an increase from the previous 370 Nm. Toyota says the higher torque output improves mid-range response and acceleration consistency.
Supporting upgrades include a revised front grille design and enhanced cooling fans to improve airflow, alongside suspension refinements at both ends to reduce inner wheel lift during aggressive cornering.

Chassis and Drivetrain Updates
The GR Corolla retains Toyota’s GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system, allowing adjustable front-to-rear torque distribution depending on driving mode and conditions. For 2026, the ABS system has been recalibrated to improve braking stability under high lateral loads, particularly during cornering.
Together, the updates reflect Toyota Gazoo Racing’s continued emphasis on usable performance rather than headline figures alone.

Technology and Safety Enhancements
Recognising daily road use, Toyota has added a Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) as standard for 2026. The infotainment system now features a 10-inch display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while a head-up display remains standard across the range.

Malaysia Pricing and Availability
The 2026 Toyota GR Corolla is available exclusively through selected GR Garage dealerships nationwide. Prices (on-the-road without insurance, private registration) are as follows:

CarTok Editor’s Note
The GR Corolla Automatic isn’t Toyota abandoning its enthusiast roots — it’s an acknowledgement of reality. The manual remains, the engineering focus is intact, and the performance hasn’t been diluted. The only real concession here is to traffic, a factor most Malaysian drivers will quietly understand. But hey, at least there’s still a handbrake lever to pull.
