Toyota Vios Range Updated in Malaysia – Adds Self-Charging Hybrid Variants

UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has expanded the Toyota Vios line-up in Malaysia with the introduction of the Vios HEV and Vios HEV GR Sport, marking the first time the brand’s long-running B-segment sedan gains a hybrid powertrain.
The Vios design and platform remain familiar, with the main change being its entry into the hybrid realm, combining its proven practicality with Toyota’s self-charging hybrid technology.

Alongside the model launch, UMWT also announced the localisation of hybrid battery assembly at its Bukit Raja plant, further strengthening Malaysia’s role in Toyota’s regional electrification plans. The facility is capable of producing up to 30,000 battery units annually, helping improve supply resilience while reducing logistics-related emissions.
Same Familiar Vios, Now With Hybrid Power
Visually, the Vios HEV remains largely identical to the existing Vios 1.5G, retaining the same DNGA-based body, fastback-style silhouette, and overall proportions. The changes are mostly in the details, with hybrid-specific trim finishes, unique alloy wheel designs, and HEV badging distinguishing it from its petrol sibling.

The key difference lies under the bonnet. The Vios HEV adopts Toyota’s fourth-generation Hybrid Electric System, pairing a 1.5-litre Dual VVT-i petrol engine with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery positioned beneath the rear seats, thus preserving boot space.
The petrol engine produces 91 PS and 121 Nm, while the electric motor contributes 80 PS and 141 Nm. Combined system output stands at 111 PS, delivered to the front wheels via an E-CVT transmission.
Toyota claims fuel consumption as low as 3.6 litres per 100 km (NEDC), making it significantly more efficient than the regular Vios 1.5G — especially in urban traffic, where the electric motor plays a bigger role.

No Charging Required
Like other Toyota hybrids, the Vios HEV is self-charging. The battery is replenished automatically through regenerative braking and energy recovery during deceleration, while the petrol engine also helps maintain charge when needed.

At low speeds, such as in traffic jams or car parks, the car can run on electric power alone for short distances. The system switches seamlessly between engine and motor, requiring no input or behaviour change from the driver.
For many buyers, this means lower fuel consumption and quieter city driving without the need to plug in or depend on public charging infrastructure.

Improved Refinement and Structural Enhancements
To support the hybrid system, the Vios HEV receives additional structural reinforcements for improved rigidity and safety. Weight-saving measures on selected body panels help offset the added mass of the battery, while extra sound insulation and acoustic glass reduce wind and road noise for a quieter cabin.
Externally, the HEV variant features dark chrome window trim, gun-metallic finishes for the grille and rear garnish, and exclusive wheels. Five body colours are available, including Platinum White Pearl, Attitude Black Mica, Silver Metallic, Celestite Grey Metallic, and Scarlet.

Cabin Tech and Everyday Comfort
Inside, the layout remains familiar but gains hybrid-specific displays. A 7-inch digital instrument cluster shows energy flow, battery charge status, and EV mode operation, while a larger 10.1-inch infotainment display supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Other highlights include 64-colour ambient lighting, leather upholstery, automatic air-conditioning, Smart Entry with push start, multiple USB ports, and a 3D Panoramic View Monitor to assist with parking. A built-in front digital video recorder is also included.

Vios HEV GR Sport: Sportier Look, Sharper Handling
For buyers wanting more visual presence and a slightly sportier drive, the Vios HEV GR Sport adds a dedicated aerokit with a more aggressive front and rear bumper design, side skirts, a boot spoiler, black exterior accents, and 17-inch alloy wheels with 205/50R17 Continental tyres for improved grip and stability.
Chassis changes include GR-tuned suspension and recalibrated electric power steering for sharper responses, while the cabin gets GR-branded trim, Leather Suede seat upholstery, contrast stitching, and GR floor mats. Despite the sportier setup, Toyota says ride comfort for daily driving is maintained.

Full Suite of Safety Systems
Both Vios HEV variants come standard with Toyota Safety Sense, which includes:
- Pre-Collision System with Autonomous Emergency Braking
- Lane Keep Control
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- Blind Spot Monitor
- Auto High Beam
A 3D Panoramic View Monitor further aids low-speed manoeuvring. The current Vios platform also carries a 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating.

Local Battery Assembly and Ownership Coverage
Supporting the Vios HEV is UMWT’s investment in a hybrid battery assembly line at Bukit Raja, capable of producing up to 30,000 battery units per year with most components assembled locally. This move improves supply resilience while supporting local workforce development in electrified vehicle technology.

In terms of ownership, the Vios HEV comes with a 5-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty. Hybrid components — including the battery, inverter, and power management unit — are covered for 8 years with unlimited mileage, with an option to extend coverage to 10 years. Roadside assistance is available via Toyota’s 24-hour support programme.
Pricing in Malaysia
- Toyota Vios HEV – from RM103,900
- Toyota Vios HEV GR Sport – from RM109,900
(Peninsular Malaysia pricing for private registration)
With the addition of these hybrid variants, the Vios range now offers Malaysian buyers a more fuel-efficient option within a familiar package — no charging cables, no lifestyle changes, just lower fuel use in everyday driving.
CarTok Editor’s Note:
It still looks like the Vios Malaysians know well — it just visits the petrol station a lot less often now, so there’s less worry of your BUDI95 running out.
