GWM WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV Secures 800 Bookings in First Week, Signals Strong Start for Malaysia-Assembled Luxury MPV

GWM Malaysia has announced that its newly launched WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV has received over 800 bookings within its first week on sale, marking a strong early response for Malaysia’s first locally assembled (CKD) luxury New Energy MPV. The WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV was officially launched on 29 January 2026.
Positioned as a Regional NEV Play
At the launch, Yang Berhormat Tuan Sim Tze Tzin, Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) described the WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV as a significant step in Malaysia’s automotive development.
“The introduction of the WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV is a bold step forward by GWM, as it looks to make first class mobility more accessible. Prioritising comfort, safety, and advanced mobility for Malaysian families, GWM’s aspirations align perfectly with our national goal of inclusive and balanced economic growth.”

He highlighted the strategic value of local assembly, pointing to Malaysia’s ecosystem of over 72 specialised vendors and a skilled technical workforce.
“Local assembly allows GWM to capitalise on Malaysia’s Free Trade Agreements, paving the way for duty-free exports within the region. This initiative supports the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP 2030) by increasing economic complexity, strengthening domestic vendor participation, and enhancing technological depth through meaningful technology transfer.”
He further encouraged deeper industrial participation from GWM in Malaysia.
“We want to see GWM grow from a participant in our market to a cornerstone of our export-oriented ecosystem.”
Early Market Validation
According to Mr. Cui Anqi, Managing Director of GWM Malaysia, the early booking figure reflects more than initial curiosity.
“We are encouraged by the strong response from Malaysian customers. For us, the bookings are more than a number, they show that customers understand what the WEY G9 stands for,” he said. “This vehicle represents our vision of intelligent luxury mobility, combining advanced technology with real comfort. The early response tells us Malaysians are ready to move into a new era of New Energy mobility.”
Mr. Roslan Abdullah, Chief Operating Officer of GWM Malaysia, added that the milestone also reflects confidence in local production capabilities.
“This milestone reflects not only strong consumer demand, but also the capability of Malaysia’s local assembly ecosystem. By leveraging our skilled workforce and vendor network, we are proving that Malaysia can deliver global standards while building long-term value for the domestic industry.”

170 km EV Range, Over 1,000 km Combined
Built around the brand’s “First Class for All” philosophy, the WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV combines plug-in hybrid efficiency with premium MPV practicality.
Powered by GWM’s Hi4 intelligent hybrid system, the G9 delivers up to 170 km of pure electric range and a total driving range exceeding 1,000 km. The setup is aimed at offering quiet, zero-emission daily commuting while retaining long-distance capability for interstate travel.
Priced at RM269,800, the WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV enters Malaysia’s luxury MPV segment as a locally assembled New Energy alternative positioned against established premium people movers.
With over 800 bookings secured in its first week, the early numbers suggest that demand for electrified, family-focused MPVs is gaining traction — particularly when backed by local assembly and regional export ambitions.

CarTok Editor’s Note:
Eight hundred bookings in a week doesn’t automatically make it a segment leader — but it does show that Malaysians are willing to consider a RM269k plug-in hybrid MPV from a relatively new premium badge. The real test now is delivery consistency, ownership experience, and whether GWM can convert early interest into long-term brand confidence.
