PUSPAKOM has reinforced the importance of Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) product labelling for imported vehicles, following a recent case where a Completely Built-Up (CBU) vehicle failed inspection due to the absence of the mandatory VTA sticker.
The reminder highlights a requirement that has been enforced by the Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ) since 2014, with additional product labelling inspection procedures introduced in 2017 under Malaysia’s VTA framework, which aligns with United Nations vehicle regulations.
According to PUSPAKOM, the VTA sticker serves as a key verification tool that confirms an imported vehicle complies with the regulatory, safety and technical standards required for use on Malaysian roads.
The VTA product label contains approval and technical compliance information that allows authorities, vehicle owners and prospective buyers to verify a vehicle’s legitimacy and regulatory status.
Why The VTA Sticker Matters
According to PUSPAKOM, the labelling requirement is particularly important for distinguishing imported CBU vehicles from locally assembled CKD models, which are subject to different taxation, approval and compliance requirements.
Beyond identification purposes, the sticker also helps:
- Verify the legitimacy of imported vehicles
- Reduce risks associated with unauthorised or “half-cut” vehicles
- Support insurance valuation and underwriting processes
- Confirm compliance with Malaysian safety and technical regulations

PUSPAKOM noted that standardised labelling assists enforcement agencies during inspections and road checks by enabling faster verification of a vehicle’s approval status.
The company said the system supports broader regulatory objectives involving Approved Permits (APs), import regulations and applicable tax requirements, while helping to maintain transparency within the automotive industry.
As Malaysia’s national vehicle inspection company, PUSPAKOM conducts mandatory inspections for several vehicle-related processes, including:
- Ownership transfers for used vehicles
- Commercial vehicle roadworthiness renewals every six months
- Vehicles with road tax expired for more than three years
- Modified vehicles involving engine or chassis changes
- New and used imported vehicles before registration
For imported vehicles, the presence of a compliant VTA label can help streamline verification during inspection.

PUSPAKOM has urged importers, distributors, dealers and vehicle owners to ensure all imported vehicles comply with the VTA labelling requirement.
