Isuzu D-Max 2.2 Wins Over Malaysian Pick-Up Buyers

The new Isuzu D-Max 2.2 is proving to be a hit with Malaysian buyers, with its combination of improved performance, greater refinement and impressive fuel economy helping the brand strengthen its position in the competitive pick-up truck market.

Despite the current situational challenge for diesel vehicle owners, the latest D-Max continues to attract both lifestyle and commercial buyers looking for lower running costs without compromising capability.

This growing appeal helped Isuzu Malaysia increase its share of the pick-up truck segment to 17.3% in the second quarter of 2026, up three percentage points from the previous quarter.

Chief Executive Officer Tomoyuki Yamaguchi said the latest D-Max builds on the model’s long-standing reputation for durability while offering a more refined driving experience.

“The traditionally-renowned capabilities of the Isuzu D-MAX now combines with a new suite of performance benefits that include refined performance and even greater fuel efficiency that offers Malaysian motorists with a superior all-round pick-up truck.”

Efficiency And Refinement Winning Over Buyers

Introduced as part of the refreshed 2026 D-Max range in March, the new 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine has quickly become the preferred choice among buyers. Replacing the popular 1.9-litre engine, the new powerplant delivers stronger performance, improved refinement and better fuel efficiency while meeting Euro 5 emissions standards.

The engine is paired with a new 8-speed automatic transmission, developed to maximise the engine’s performance characteristics while providing smoother and more responsive driving.

Reflecting its popularity, the D-Max 2.2 Standard 4×4 Auto has emerged as the brand’s best-selling variant, accounting for 36% of total D-Max sales.

Automatic Single Cab Proving Popular

The new D-Max 2.2 Single Cab Auto is also exceeding expectations. As Malaysia’s first single-cab pick-up available with an automatic transmission, it now makes up 60% of all D-Max Single Cab sales.

Designed for commercial users who need a capable workhorse without sacrificing driving comfort, the model combines its automatic gearbox with Isuzu’s proven 4×4 system to handle demanding loads and challenging terrain.

Chief Operating Officer of Isuzu Malaysia’s Light Commercial Vehicle Division Kenichi Kudo said the new powertrain has elevated the D-Max in every key area.

“The new range of Isuzu D-MAX with its new 2.2-litre engine and 8-speed automatic transmission have performed exceptionally well since its launch in April this year. The new powerhouse achieves improved heights in every aspect ranging from fuel efficiency, power, quietness and emission. That’s why we don’t hesitate to call it our ‘Best Engine Ever’.”

Ten Variants To Suit Different Buyers

The 2026 Isuzu D-Max range now consists of 10 variants, catering to everyone from fleet operators and small businesses to families and outdoor enthusiasts.

With the addition of the new 2.2-litre engine, Isuzu believes it has strengthened the D-Max’s appeal by delivering a more refined driving experience while maintaining the durability, reliability and low running costs that have made the model one of Malaysia’s most popular pick-up trucks.

CarTok Editor’s Note

Malaysia’s pick-up truck segment has always been one of the most competitive parts of the automotive market. Every percentage point of market share is hard fought, and sustained growth is difficult to achieve.

The market has become even more challenging following the rationalisation of diesel subsidies. Against this backdrop, it is impressive that Isuzu Malaysia is able to raise its market share to 17.3%. It indicates that the D-Max presents a compelling proposition to buyers. The success of the new 2.2-litre D-Max suggests that improvements in fuel efficiency, refinement and everyday drivability are resonating with customers at a time when operating costs have become a much bigger consideration than before.
