MG Motor Malaysia Marks 2nd Anniversary With Strong Q1 2026 Growth, MGS5 EV CKD Momentum

MG Motor Malaysia is celebrating its second anniversary in the local market with a strong first quarter of 2026, supported by growing sales, localisation milestones, network expansion, and increased customer engagement activities.

Held alongside its “2nd Anniversary: Passion To Drive” event at Bamboo Hills, the brand highlighted several key developments that shaped its momentum in the opening months of the year.

Among the major highlights shared during its “2nd Anniversary: Passion To Drive” event was the recognition of the MG Cyberster as Performance Car of the Year by Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii). The award further strengthens MG’s positioning in the EV segment, particularly in combining performance-oriented driving dynamics with electrification.

Another major milestone came in March with the official roll-out ceremony of the locally assembled MG S5 EV at the EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB) facility in Melaka. The event marked MG’s first CKD electric vehicle project in Malaysia and signals the company’s longer-term commitment towards localisation, technology transfer, and the development of the local EV ecosystem.

The MGS5 EV CKD is currently priced from RM116,900 in Malaysia and is now available for viewing and test drives at MG showrooms nationwide. MG Motor Malaysia is also offering launch promotions worth up to RM9,000 for the model.

MG also used the anniversary event to highlight several key features of the MGS5 EV. The EV SUV offers up to 446 km of WLTP-rated driving range and supports DC fast charging up to 150 kW, allowing a 10-80% charge in as little as 26 minutes.

The higher-spec Lux variant also receives a more powerful 151 kW electric motor producing 350 Nm of torque, along with ventilated leather seats, electric passenger seat adjustment, and a powered tailgate.

MG says the MGS5 EV’s horizontal battery layout helps lower the vehicle’s centre of gravity for a sportier driving feel, while safety equipment includes seven airbags and ADAS 2.5 driver assistance features such as Traffic Jam Assist and Intelligent Cruise Control.

The model also comes with a seven-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty, an eight-year/180,000 km battery pack warranty, and an eight-year/160,000 km motor control unit warranty. MG further highlighted the model’s five-star safety ratings from both Euro NCAP and ASEAN NCAP.

Beyond product launches, the company continued to push customer engagement activities through festive showroom campaigns, dealer open houses during Chinese New Year and Hari Raya, as well as its “Experience British Driving Dynamics” test drive campaign.

MG also expanded its retail visibility through roadshows at several high-traffic lifestyle destinations including Desa ParkCity, Quayside Mall, The Curve, Starling Mall, and IOI City Mall.

Internationally, MG also continued to showcase its broader technology ambitions. During MG Tech Day in Frankfurt, the brand unveiled its MG Hybrid+ technology alongside what it claims to be the world’s first mass-produced semi-solid-state battery.

According to MG Motor Malaysia, the company recorded a 57% sales increase in Q1 2026 compared to Q4 2025, while year-on-year sales grew 39% against Q1 2025.

“Q1 has been a meaningful and encouraging start to the year for MG in Malaysia,” said Emory Qi, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia. “From product recognition to the local roll-out of the MGS5 EV CKD, these milestones reflect the strength of our product line-up and our long-term commitment to the Malaysian market.”

He added that the company will continue focusing on product development, customer engagement, localisation efforts, and network expansion moving further into 2026.

MG Motor Malaysia also confirmed its participation in the upcoming Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS), where the brand plans to showcase its latest developments and future direction. The company also announced that Jozef Kaban will be present at the show to share insights into MG’s evolving global design language.

On the network side, MG plans to expand its dealership footprint further with upcoming 3S centres in Kuantan and Rawang. The company also stated that it currently supports customers through up to 11 body and paint facilities nationwide as part of its aftersales development plans.

CarTok Editor’s Note

MG’s Malaysian expansion phase is now moving beyond brand introduction and into something more important — establishing long-term staying power. That means continued localisation, dealership expansion, and stronger aftersales support, because in Malaysia’s EV market, ownership confidence matters just as much as the product itself.
