Perodua Exports Traz And Alza To Sri Lanka, Strengthens Presence In Key Overseas Market

Perodua has expanded its export programme with the shipment of its latest Perodua Traz and the Perodua Alza MPV to Sri Lanka, reinforcing the island nation’s position as one of the Malaysian carmaker’s most important overseas markets.

Sri Lanka has remained one of Perodua’s largest export destinations, with more than 20,000 Perodua vehicles sold there since 1997.

Perodua president and chief executive officer Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad said the company currently exports completely built-up (CBU) vehicles to six countries: Brunei, Fiji, Mauritius, Bangladesh, Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka.

“We are also looking to export our pre-owned vehicles. So far, we have expanded our market to include Timor Leste this year,” he said.

Strong Demand After Import Restrictions Lifted

United Motors Lanka PLC group chief executive officer and executive director Chanaka Yatawara said the company has sold close to 3,000 vehicles since Sri Lanka lifted its vehicle import restrictions in 2025.

“Supported by Perodua’s proven manufacturing capabilities and the United Motors Group’s extensive sales and service network, we are confident that the Traz and Alza will further strengthen this trust among Sri Lankan families and businesses,” he said.

CarTok Editor’s Note

Perodua’s export volumes remain modest compared with its domestic sales, reflecting the company’s continued focus on serving the Malaysian market. Even so, overseas markets play an important strategic role. Sustained demand in countries such as Sri Lanka strengthens Perodua’s international presence while showcasing Malaysian-made vehicles to a wider audience.

The Sri Lankan launch also offers an interesting perspective on vehicle pricing. While Malaysians frequently bring up the cost of imported cars, countries with restrictive import policies and high vehicle taxes (Sri Lanka and Singapore, to name a few) can be even more expensive places to own a car.

A Perodua Traz carrying a price tag of around RM243,000 is a reminder of how government policy can dramatically influence what consumers ultimately pay.
